Yesterday was pretty good. They ended up doing without the IV. The docs weren't happy about it but decided we could try to do without. Of course, the big issues were keeping him hydrated and trying to get meds in and keep them down.
I'm happy to report success! Fluids are low, but he's nursing some and he has taken a few partial bottles. During the night, he even took 3 ounces straight! Meds are still a fight but all stayed down. Temp was good for 12 hours with no meds (during transition from IV to oral) and then started to creep back up. Thankfully, meds brought it down and have kept it there.
So as of last night, they found staph epidermis growing in the culture. This is a skin bacteria that generally doesn't grow in the urinary tract, usually it's a result of sample contamination. However, it CAN grow there so we're treating it as if it is an infection. The stents that are in actually raise the likelihood of it growing in there and there's certainly more risk in not treating than treating.
We have started oral antibiotics that we can potentially go home on. If he keeps trending upward, we can probably go home this afternoon. They like 24 hour observation on the new meds to make sure things don't start to go bad again. That won't be until 8pm so I hope we can sneak out a little earlier than that.
Specifically, we need to continue to have increasing fluid intake and output. Controlled fever -it's okay if he has a fever, we just need the Tylenol to manage it. And lastly, we need positive demeanor changes. So far, so good.
He was alert some in the afternoon. He laughed and interacted a little when Dad was up. He made some sounds when reading books and playing cars. And he hasn't been quite so attached to his car. He doesn't feel like a furnace.
Still hates vitals, and those are every 4 hours. Still hates when anyone comes in but is watching more and screaming a bit less. I am super hopeful we have turned the corner and found it to be the right road.
While reading "Mr Bown Can Moo, " he pointed to Mr Brown and said Dada. So we called Dada, but he wasn't really ready for that yet.
Some kids have security blankets. Some kids have stuffed animals. This kid has his car.
We took a walk to sit in the atrium for a bit. I got 2000 steps in, that was a welcome change.
In one hall they have all of the medical class photos. It's fun to see and surprising to find women all the way back into the 1800s!
1861. Incredible.
Not sure if this was total cost, but 15 dollars. 1864.
Found a tear and needed to check it out. Theb he banged in the keyboard and ultimately broke the TV. No big deal, but we had been using it for white noise! There's a lot of noise in a hospital. Thankfully, I have an app to use.
Another walk to find Dad some dinner. He was oh so tired.
He didn't look comfy but since he wasn't moving or fussing, we let him sleep a little.
Bedtime. With car.
Finally gave that suckered up during the night.
